I have said it before. I am a drone. I have no life beyond my PGCE and I’m sick to the back teeth of it. When I come home and find that DM has successfully grown a tray full of tomato plants and has been mowing the lawn and other gardening tasks, it invokes two emotions in me.
The first is sheer joy and pride (that’s the nice one that reminds me that I am a human being after all). He’s shown almost no interest in gardening ever before and to be honest, in the past he’s annoyed me because he ducks out of mowing the lawn (which is, after all, a man’s job, just like putting out the bins) because of his hayfever or else he goes outside with a machete and hacks everything in sight to within an inch of its life. So, to find him taking the leading role in the garden is wonderful. I hope it continues beyond the end of my course.
The other emotion is nasty, bitchy, twisted jealousy. HE’S doing what *I* want to be doing. He’s got his hands in the soil. He’s nurturing. He’s growing things. Me? All I do is work. So there you have it. I’m an evil monster who is consumed by envy – one of the deadly sins I believe.
