Scarlet Cup fungi (Sarcosypha austriaca)

This is one of the earliest fungi to appear in spring, and I went looking for it in a spot I've found it in previous years. Sure enough, there were quite a few popping up. They fruit on woody matter such as twigs, and under the leaf litter each one was on a bit of a rotting wood. These sac fungi can grow to 4 cm, but these ones were about a quarter of that size.

Nice series. We have a couple of same kind of species, also in the very beginning of spring.

A splash of colour on the brown ground of this spring - appreciate the info too.
