Southern 8099 eases by the remains of the HARTCO lumber mill at Oneida, TN

Oneida, TN

NS Central Div, 2nd District of the CNO&TP

"Emptiness, Despair and a Glimpse of the Past" Chances are, if you lived or worked in or near Scott County, TN your job was in or supported coal or timber. Those Two natural resources have written the economic history of that area for hundreds of years, and right now that history is a sad one. Few (if any) coal producers are still in operation, and this scene standing in the middle of the once busy HARTCO lumber mill tells the story. Southern 8099 turns on the wye at Oneida, passing the idled kilns and empty lots that used to contain stacks of hardwood....and the hopes and dreams of the people that made a living from it. The Railroad still stops here, but not for the reasons it used to.
