Church of St. Lorenz

Hof, Germany

St. Lorenz church is the oldest one in Hof.
The first written mention of it comes from the 1214 chroniques by Enoch Widman, but it might been built even in 1080 as the little chappel called Laurentiuskapelle and enlarged in future centuries, according to Hof’s chronicler Enoch Widman.
At that time this place was a village called Rekkenze, from which the city Hof started its history.

This massive place of worship has a particular fascination. It stands on a rocky promontory above the River Saale on which, legends say, there once was a castle, the “Klausenburg”. The church, the manse with its half-timbered gable and the little park, which was used as a cemetery until 1863, form a harmonious entity and offer a peaceful oasis in the middle of crowded streets of the city.
