A New Leaf

I haven't been able to ID this leaf yet. Perhaps someone will help with that. The leaf was along the Pre Tail in Alton Baker Park, sunlit in a shady area. It jumped out at me. One suggestion is that it is a fern, called Calaguala (Polipodium),commonly used in South America and Spain in the treatment of psoriasis - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8066104 Another suggestion is Polypodium vulgare, also used for medicine and found in the Pacific Northwest. So perhaps it is more likely that. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypodium_vulgare I appreciate the feedback, it is educational.

Beautiful colors and nice isolation.
A fern for sure. Those rows of orange dots are spoors. Vote.

Good use of light. I think others are better informed than me as to what kind of a fern this is.

Looks like the ferns we studies at school. I used to know the names of all those bits, but then I can't jump over houses any more either. Works well with the black background & strong contrast.
Yvonne27-Feb-2014 09:53
The orange spots would be spores to reproduce new ferns. The lighting is quite
spectacular in the inky darkness Vern...

Beautiful green leaf out of the dark - wonder what are those orange points, maybe a fungus?
