This building was single storey and quite a different style from many of the others. However, I wanted to show the building material used frequently in old Balad – coral mixed with sea shells taken from the reefs off the coast and joined together with a mortar made from lagoon mud. It would seem to be a somewhat fragile building material, and sadly much of it has deteriorated. I saw new construction that appeared (at least) to include coral, but seemed to be better held together.
