This hoisting equipment seems very ancient - note that this is not the traditional "rope-on-spool" kind of setting, but rather a flat wire in a "film-spool" configuration.

A guess is that this particular shaft with its supporting infrastructure was kept as a emergency exit when the new shaft was opened

Hi Jacob.
In Belgium we have an old mine with the same hoisting gear. The mine is Bois du Cazier, closed after the worst accident in the Belgian mine history. It is kept as a museum and you can see the gear still in place. I visited the mine, but my photos are not processed yet. You can see an example on the following link.
