The end of the road

This heavenly body was in front of us for a long time, heading west-southwest on the journey back to Riyadh. Suddenly it disappeared from sight.

Thanks for the support for this sub-gallery! I was debating whether or not to even post it, but in the end hoped that maybe people might be interested in seeing what a trip through the desert looked like. One would think it might have been a boring drive, but I actually enjoyed the (surprisingly) changing scenery and the challenge of trying to take pictures at 130 km/h with my little camera. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the country in the future.

Great picture showing the vastness of the desert and sky. According to my stellarium astronomical software the moon was at 48 deg elevation and WSW in your sky at the time the photo was taken. The Sun had not set either and so the moon would have been a very bright crescent in a relatively bright sky and this would explain the object you saw. Why it disappeared is simply that it disappeared into the sandstorm in the sky as it set and was not bright enough then to be seen.

Cool capture, Helen. If I had to guess (and I am) I would think this might be some sort of weather balloon. That would explain it being around so long. The disappearance due to going into Earth's shadow?

Was the object moving? Might it have been the International Space Station reflecting the light from the sun until blinking out when it moved into the earth's shadow?
