As I was taking pictures near the Lucin grade crossing, the warning bell starting clanging and the red lights flashing, announcing the approach of a train. Watching trains go by is fun, so I was pleased by this sudden turn of events. I quickly got my camera holster (it holds my spare battery and film cards).
A glance to the west revealed no eastbound trains, so I got ready to shoot a westbound train coming from the other direction. The view to the east is obscured by a hill and a curve in the track, so I could see no train there either. All I had to do was wait a little bit before the train would appear. That was at 1302 or so. I waited. And waited. And waited. That was followed by additional waiting, then yet more waiting. After that I continued to wait. During this waiting, the bell and lights kept going without let-up. The noise of the bell got to be annoying.
To make a long story short, no train appeared for about 45 minutes. The crossing signals were defective. I called the grade crossing hotline and reported the problem. Maintenance people would have to come out from Ogden to fix it. Finally, a westbound train passed by. After it passed through the crossing, the bell went silent and the lights went dark.
