Brown Creeper

I was standing behind a tree at Delta Ponds this morning trying to get some pictures of an egret when I saw a movement in the tree right in front of me! With my eyes the way they are, I don't always see small things. But there it was, a small bird creeping up the tree, feeding. It must not have noticed me because I was pretty close. I never saw it until I saw movement. It blended in with the tree so well!

I had never seen one like it so when I got home I checked my book for the slightly curved beak and the colors, browns and white with a white breast. The picture and description of the Brown Creeper fit perfectly, even to the tail feathers. Quite a thrill, I had never seen one before!

There is some information about the Brown Creeper in Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Creeper

Awesome. Love all the feather colors and that beak is made for food finding for sure. Linda S

What a wonderful find Vern! I wonder if they are similar to the little wrens we have with that save curved beaks. Usually the curved beak means they get insects from inside the bark of trees.

Good catch! Interesting story. My first thought for "brown creeper" was a slow moving UPS truck

A fine capture of this beautiful bird. We have tree-creepers here too, but so colourful as this one.

Brown Creepers are the very devil to photograph. They fly to the bottom of the tree, work their way up to the top looking for bugs, then fly back down. They are constant motion, and blend in really well. Not only that, they are not especially common. Great job on this difficult bird.

It's always so exciting to see a bird or animal we haven't seen before. Look at those claws! No wonder it can hold on and climb trees so well.
