Black maple (Acer nigrum)

We have only one black maple at the FWG, planted before we took over the site. It is located on the north side of the Ash Woods. The underside of the leaves are quite "fuzzy", a distinctive feature, otherwise it is somewhat similar to the sugar maple. According to John Laird Fraser in his "Trees of Canada", black maple "May be variety of sugar maple; trees with intermediate features frequently occur."
