This is part of the real Mamluki door, as depicted on a panel in the image below.
Although our luxurious life in Budapest has come to an end and I now have to do things like cook dinner again (!), I did hire a cleaning person today, a young Nepalese guy who came highly recommended to me, because I simply do not have time to clean the house here. When I commented on how much dust (really sand) there was on everything, he said that it wasn’t much compared to what it would be when the weather is not as nice as it is now. I can’t even imagine what will happen when we have a sand storm, which are common here as we’re in the middle of a desert. He said that in bad weather, you can clean one day, and the next everything will be coated in dust. Unfortunately, the embassy doesn't provide vacuum cleaners that will actually pick up dust on marble floors without a struggle, and definitely not in corners and along baseboards as it’s an upright – they said canister vacuum cleaners “break too often.” We are in a Saudi house and do need one, so I guess we’ll have to try to find one with US voltage as this house is 110, oddly enough. That should be a real challenge here, in a 220 volt country! Still, I’m relieved to have somebody to clean, and at a reasonable price. Needless to say, he'll be coming every week.
