Shrike

At Home, J-Six West, Pima Co., AZ

The picture is a little soft because I had to fight the sun glare while shooting this beauty through
my kitchen window.
The Northern and Loggerhead Shrikes are uncommon to rare and I am always excited to see one!
It is difficult to tell them apart unless you see them both together, which is not bound to happen.
The Northern Shrike has a larger bill with an obvious hook and a little white marking around the eye.
The Loggerhead has a stubby bill without the obvious hook at the tip and lacks the white marking
around the eye. Both are predatory, hunting for grasshoppers, small birds and rodents.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful comments on this shot, and to Hal and Christine
for their help identifying this one as a Loggerhead Shrike.

Nice shot, but I bet it is a Loggerhead. Northern Shrikes breed in the far North. There have only been one or two reported in WA and BC this fall yet, so it is unlikely they have made it to AZ. Northerns have an even more exagerated hook of their bill, and barring on their underside. Loggerheads are more striking in appearance. The only one I have seen was down there. See: http://www.pbase.com/hge54/image/131086407 for comparison. V

What a fantastic shot and an interesting sighting. I don't think of this particular shrike species being found so far south. V

Pretty catch and yes the sun does sometimes give a bigger challenge of our subjects.
