06-OCT-2013 Sally Mynhardt

This was taken at Windang Island.
These days it is not an island anymore.
It was joined to the mainland in the 1870's
when a railroad was built to remove rocks from the island.

Dear Pete, Janice, Cindy and Gary
Thank you for your very kind comments.
Gary in answer to your question. Yes there is a story about the old railway wheels.
ln the 1870's there was a plan to deepen the nearby lake to take small steamers
so they could fetch butter and milk from the dairy farms around the lake and take it
to Sydney. Sydney is about 80 miles North of here and there was no road at that time.
This railway was built to take rocks from Windang Island to the lake.
The plan was scrapped before one rock was removed !!
Everything was just left on the beach and there is has stayed for over 130 years....
just rusting away.

Nice image of this seascape. Is there a story concerning those abandoned wheels?

It's a shame they didn't take the unwanted machines with them when they left. Interesting scene, thank you Sally

The industrial relics have melded into the scene well.
A pleasing composition

A very well taken photo Sally.
l might add that this shot was taken at high tide.
At low tide there is a wide, flat volcanic rock platform around the island.
We often walk around there when the tide is out, looking for bird shots.
This is an excellent photo !

Very nicely composted, Sally. Those rusted railroad wheels add tons of interest and depth.

What an interesting landscape with the sea and the sand and the wheels.

Wonderful composition. I've seen those railroad wheels in some of Hal's photos. Fascinating.
