This cross, acting as a memorial for slain Utah Highway Patrol trooper Dennis Lund, is one of several in the state that were subject of a legal controversy concerning the separation of church and state. Based on a court ruling in 2011, the crosses had to be removed from government (mostly state) property. The Utah Highway Patrol has more information on the memorials.
This cross was photographed in 2006 at the westbound rest area on Interstate 70 at the base of San Rafael Reef, about 16 miles west of Green River, Utah.
Written on it is "TRP. DENNIS "DEE" LUND #316; Utah Highway Patrol 1993."
