the Eastgate Clock was added to the
walkway on top of Eastgate, in 1899, to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen
Victoria. The structure, with a clock, was designed by John Douglas, and it was
made by J. B. Joyce & Company of Whitchurch, Shropshire, who, until 1974 sent
a technician to wind it (weekly), and the iron tower was built James Swidley, of
Handbridge. The clock is “the most photographed clock in England, after Big Ben”.
This photo is, of the north side of the clock, and is taken from the walkway on the wall.
