apparently, Chester Racecourse is
the oldest racecourse (still in use) in England. The first recorded
horse race took place here in 1539 with the consent of the Mayor
Henry Gee. The term “gee-gee” (an English colloquialism for a
horse) is, perhaps, linked to this Henry Gee. The track is very short,
compared to others, with a length of 1 mile and 1 furlong (1•6 km)
and a straight of only 239 yards. It is flat and raced anti-clockwise.
