Hover flies (Toxomerus marginatus)

These are very, very common little hover flies, especially around gardens, but also in natural areas too. They are about 5 to 6 mm in length, and they hover above flowers like tiny helicopters. They are very welcome in gardens for their larvae are enthusiastic predators of aphids and other small insects, such as caterpillars.
