I suspect these animals need the crowd for diversion, as much as the crowd wants to see them. Such a small enclosure (better than a cage, I must say!) must be known in every detail, down to each pebble. THe visitors are probably a welcome distraction, being watched as much as the pandas themselves are gawked at and appreciated.
