Red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens)

Photographed in Larose Forest. There were several of these small newts (about 10mm) swimming through a wetland site. This interesting species has a terrestrial stage, when it is often known as the Red Eft http://www.pbase.com/image/106456864). This is the stage that occurs after it transforms from the larval stage, leaves the water, and lives on land for a year or two. In that stage, it is a vivid red or reddish orange, unlike the duller colours of this aquatic stage.
