Paul Gardener No111 March 60 to June 62. Joined MN Stayed at sea until Dec 1987. Back injury sent me ashore in Australia. Went in to computing till I retired 2012. Enjoying life to the full. Thanks Arethusa for life long memories, and the best start to like a kid could wish, PJ's excepted.

Yep;...I think 'worst of times/best of times' - about covers it. I was onboard 61' -63'...number 82 -Top Port. One of the 'best of times' was being Drum Major and visiting all over South East England with the Arethusa Band.

On board 58/61 finished up CPO Boy with Colin Renick before we joined the RN. Trying to find out date of Prince Phillips visit end of 1960, I was the CPO who took the group around the visit group. Smudge was a good friend with me in Gym team events. Went aboard Peking when she was on display in New York and we had a large group of old boys fly over from UK. Still live in USA, but hope to come over every year for HMS Broadsword reunion as was PWO on her in the Falkland conflict.

Joined 1959. Left to join RN 1961. Ships book number 231. Quarterdeck Starboard. Made some good mates. Had some good and not so good times. Learned seamanship and boat handling that has lasted into later life on boats sailing with friends around Europe.

I'm glad I found this page on line. Chris mentions a 'Smudge' Smethurst, one of the few names I can recall from my time as a boy on the Arethusa. I was number 40, Top Port of course from 59-61. Grateful for all they taught me before using it in the RN. Shacks Shackelton gave me the basics in gymnastics and compulsory boxing which came in handy too. Mr Fuller, grateful for his seamanship and signals input. Magic times...could go on for ages.
Tony Butler was my name then. Another story....

Hello all, I was on the Arry from 1959-1961 quarter deck port number 180. Before joining RN. I remember doing a science lesson when Phillip came in and he spoke to me which was later reported in the Beckenham and Penge advertiser. My first ship was Centaur with a certain RM Smythurst. the Navigators Yeoman on Tiger and then HMY Britannia. I have just received the MBE for service to the community. As an unpaid volunteer Appropriate adult in Tonbridge police custody I had taken part in over 1,700 police interviews of juveniles and vulnerable adults arrested by the police. I have always told everyone that the reason I had this empathy with sometime difficult children was because I was an Arethusa boy.

My Brother William Arther Hendrick was on the training ship Arethusa around 1954/55 after serving several years in the Navy he became a recluse, not wanting anything to do with family for 50 years, sadly he has just passed away, I would like to hear from any old mates he may have had on his training and his service, He would have been known as Bill

I am sorry Michael but I was never on the Arethusa. I do not contact people who were on it, but I am quite happy to let all those who were, chat to each other on my gallery.
Generally if someone who knew your uncle reads this they will leave a comment.
I believe there is a very large website owned and run by all the old boys from the Arethusa, look for it on Google, they might be more helpful.
Good luck.
