_DSC9159pb.jpg "Eight Hotels of Wetaskiwin" days of old

Wetaskiwin & District Heritage Museum 2013

I must be ancient as I can remember four of them. Two major hotel as I see it were the Driard Hotel, built in 1892, burn't down, rebuilt in 1903, and it burn't down in 1885, I saw it go down.. The other one was the Prince of Whales built in 1903, closed down 1916 prohibition, reopened as a military hospital then became a hotel in the 30's...Today it is till standing and is called Riggers... My memories were when I started to go to the hotels, women had to sit in their own area.. Men had their side... Men could join the women... Beer was 10 cents a glass... Age limit was 21 and can remember sneaking in getting served at 18.. The old Crows nest was still going and it was a dive.... Guess the one that probably was the most important was the Criterion Hotel that was turned into a apartment. I live there when I was born for a year or so... I look back and say wow, those were the days...
