Many of the buildings lining the Malecon are in ruins
or in various stages of disrepair. However, much
renovation is taking place as evidenced by the number of
cranes and scaffolding that dot the city. New businesses
are also appearing along the esplanade as economic reforms are
permitting Cubans to own their own businesses.
