On August 13, 1886 John A MacDonald arrived by train from Esquimalt to Cliffside, a small siding on the east side of Shawnigan Lake to drive in the last(Gold)spike to complete the E&N Railway and to celebrate his promise to build a railroad right across Canada. This project brought British Columbia and the Colony of Vancouver Island into the Confederation of Canada.
