The building with the cupola was originally a court house, built in 1767. It was sold to South Shields town council in 1855 and used for council meetings for approximatley 60 years. The Old town hall is now a protected building and is not used but stands as a monument to times past.

The perspective is compelling, with that cupola or spire in the background, to which the road leads. Looks like a university building of some kind? I would love to wander down such a street.

I have driven a little in the USA and I dont find it much different from here, maybe because of years in the army reserve training in Germany got me used to driving on the wrong side of the road.

so Michael - do you drive when you come over to visit Shirley? I am old enough - and probably think too little about driving - that I would be just scared to drive in another country. Really gives a good feel for what the country looks like. It has that "look" of being near big water.

That's a modern "German" mini though...

Yeah, and a Mini Cooper! Classic England with that little Mini in the shot.
