130112_042557_27555 Thirroul Pool, Sunrise (Sat 12 Jan 13)

Thirroul, Illawarra, NSW

I'd had this shot in mind for a while and since we had another hot night last night I was awake early enough to get it. The far wall of the pool faces the beach and, consequently, the sunrise which you can see transforming the sky from deep blue to pink. I felt that the colours of the pool would provide a decent colour offset to that.

I wasn't wildly enthused by the 10-22's sharpness on this one but I was shooting through grates in a fence so the tripod's stability may not have been ideal. Still, it's close to what I envisaged. In a couple of the earlier shots that I took using the 24-105 Venus was still visible in the sky but in the end I decided that I'd rather lose Venus and gain the wide angle.

The other beauty of this shot is that it saved me doing any work in PhotoShop. The combination of natural and artificial light gave me all the colour saturation that I wanted (yes, I did have to bump the exposure by 2/3rds of a stop but I was expecting that which is why I bracketed to be sure), and who needs to create a vignette when the sunrise can do it for you? Sometimes laziness is good!

I like this with a classic 1950s feel to it somehow. I might have cropped tighter but the wonder of photography is the variation in people's vision of the world.

I agree with everything you write: a straightforward, well composed and very effective, moody shot, great colours and contrasts and yes; even the unbeatable, natural vignette. SUPER! Excellent souvenir for you AND an elegant picture for the public.
(I love these simple, straight out of the camera-shots, reminding me of my good old filmroll-days ;-))

It must be nice to have the sunrise over the ocean :-)
I thought this had a vintage feel to it, but agree with Yvonne, they are very Australian colours.
