On the night that Jesus was born, shepherds were watching over their sheep in the fields.
They were startled by the appearance of an angel proclaiming to them:

"Do not be afraid, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
For there is born to you this day in the City of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."
