The palace of Knossos was constructed around 1900 BC. It was the religious and governing centre of the Minoan kingdom. The original complex was destroyed by an earthquake. It was rebuilt but was destroyed again by a massive volcanic eruption in 1500 BC. In the late 19th century a British archaelogist Sir Arthur Evans excavated and restored the site.
