New culms (stems) grow clonally from the underground parts of the bamboo plant, emerging first as shoots.
The white pith inside the shoots of quite a few species are edible.
This one belongs to the Top End Bamboo (Bambusa arnhemica) of northern Australia. It is pleasantly edible when very fresh, but soon becomes bitter and poisonous.
