new culm

hoots expand like a lengthening telescope, initially forming unbranched poles. This expansion can be extremely rapid, perhaps justifying bamboo’s claim-to-fame as the fastest growing plant on earth with rates that are occasionally greater than 1 metre per day.
I photographed this new culm in the forests of Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand.
