This young map turtle was basking on a rock at the Morris Island Conservation Area. These are considered very uncommon in this area, and are known from a few locations, but never in large numbers. It is quite different from the more common painted turtle. The latter has red markings on the the edge of its shell (carapace), and yellow lines on the head. The carapace is also much smoother and greener. The ridge on the back of this one indicates it is a youngster.
