the rod in the foreground is powered by the crankshaft and pushes/pulls the beam end up and down - at the other end of the beam is a corresponding rod operating the pump cylinder (unless its all the other way round!)

NB one day I will work out how to put onto pbase a slideshow of the series of images taken at 1/3 sec intervals that makes a slow-motion video
