Intensity, Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym, Havana, Cuba, 2012

The hands of this boxer crush rolls of tape, strengthening muscles and tendons that must bear the brunt of the attack. I photographed this boxer dozens of times as he worked out, and this image conveyed the most intensity I saw all morning.

Tension can often be a very intense emotion. It is not by accident that the word "tension" is strongly related to the word "intense." These boxers push emotion to the limit as they train. Thanks,Celia, for noting this, as well as the role of the reflections here.

The tension in his hands and on his face is amazing. The sheen of light reflecting off his sweaty body also expresses how intense his workout must be.
