Preparation, Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym, Havana, Cuba, 2012

Three primary colors -- red, blue, and yellow – combine here to express the colorful nature of boxing itself. The boxer is relaxed as he methodically wraps his fist in brilliant red tape, echoing the red trunks he wears here. The yellow waistband repeats the yellow of the old walls surrounding the ring. Highlights play across his rippling muscles. One must be very strong to be a boxer, and this portrait is an image of a powerful man.

Celia -- your comment on this image is perfect. You see beyond the image itself, and define it in terms of the contradictions it presents. And Tim, you see the tension of the tape, the gleam of the sweat, and the ancient frayed wrapping as expressions of the plight of the Cubans themselves, and their struggle to overcome adversity. Together, you both add a great dimension to this image. Thank you.

several things interest me about this image. The tension of the red tape - the light on his body, and the frayed wrapping below the rope on the left. For me this all speaks of the spirit of the Cubans to carry on in spite of the trials of their lives.

A beautiful and unusual portrait of a boxer. I say "unsual" because boxers are often portrayed as hard and aggressive due to the nature of the sport, but you let us see a glimpse of a boxer with his guard down, momentarily. It gives me the sense that this boxer is human too, needing a break once in a while, and not always a fighting machine in attack mode. I love that his environment is so worn out and tired, yet he seems so strong and ever ready to go!

He looks professional, because that is how gyms such as this train boxers. And yes, I saw that stretch of red tape gleam in the sun as well. It made the picture for me. Thanks, Carol.

He looks like a professional boxer to me. I like how the stretch of tape about to be wound onto his hand is highlighted by the sun. Fantastic portrait!
