it is rather extraordinary, though maybe inevitable, how the vaulting of the interior stops short of the exterior and the outer skin of masonry contains rather rectilinear windows. I can just hear Mrs Leigh saying "but darling how I can hang curtains from an arch?" and A.W.N Pugin adding "maybe I can design the inside scholastically, but you are on your own outside; domestic buildings in the C14th had to be defendable and later ones weren't properly gothic; you should have got Wyatt before he died"
