The Redstone was the first rocket that sent an American into space even if it was only sub orbital.
The 40th Group was also stationed at McCully Barracks. Here they are assembling the rocket.
During this time I was smoking a pipe and when I wanted to take a picture without being obvious that I was, I would start puffing on the pipe and hold the camera like a lighter. I was within feet of several field grade officers when I took this picture.
