To Paul, thank you so much for your description on creating High Focus Range (HFR) images. I have spent the last day or so immersing myself in the topic.

This image is a three image stack. For those wanting to do HFR images in Photoshop, here's the recipe:

Increasing Focal Range Using Photoshop

  1. With camera mounted to a tripod, shoot several images at the same aperture, making sure that in the collection of images, a different spot is in focus. Camera should process in RAW format.
  2. Open all images in Adobe Raw converter. Select all of the images and process them at the same time using the same settings. Save the images as PSD files.
  3. Open all PSD images in Adobe Bridge. Once opened select them all. From the Bridge Tools menu choose Photoshop -> Load Files Into Photoshop Layers
  4. Once in Photoshop, open the Layers Palette and multi-slect all the layers
  5. Choose Edit Menu -> Auto-Align Layers. (select Auto in the Dialog Box
  6. Again from the Edit Menu -> Auto-Blend Layers. (select Stack Images in the Dialog Box)
  7. Choose Layers Flatten to merge all layers into one.

BTW, this image probably didn't benefit significantly from the HFR treatment, though there was definitely improved focus around some of the edges. This was more an exercise in workflow and process.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I have to agree with Paul. The ability to create HFR images is a nice tool to have in your tool box, but as a challenge topic, it would have limited interest. I will certainly continue using it now that I see its potential, but then, it fits my photography style quite well. -- Leo

This type of photography could make a good challenge but I suspect we would only have a few photographers who would attempt it. It is challenging and time consuming setting up, shooting and processing. But as you can see in this example it is worth the effort. Paul

I'll have to try this one day. Looks like HFR may end up becoming a challenge one day. :)

This is excellent work Leo. I was aware that you can use Photoshop to make a depth stack but I use Elements and that is one of the features that is not included. I have made simple ones with PSE by masking layers but nothing more than 3 images. Again, excellent you should be proud of this. Paul

A fun image to study. It came our very well.

Now you have me thinking of HFR -- though I only have PSE, not PS.
