Desert camp, Wadi Rum, Jordan, 2011

Visiting Wadi Rum at day’s end offered stunning views of desert landscapes. After sunset, we gathered in a large desert camp for dinner, and while it was being cooked, I wandered off into the rows of empty tents intended for large tourist groups. (This year’s political upheavals in the Middle East have cost Jordan dearly in tourist revenue.) I noticed that the pointed roofs of the tents echoed the range of mountains that cross this desert, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia’s exploits here during the First World War. The sun had already gone down, leaving its golden imprint on the evening sky and on the range of thin clouds that floated overhead. A 90mm short telephoto focal length helped me weave the layers of tents, mountains, and sky into a harmonious scene.

Thanks, Claudia, for this wonderful comment. It is much appreciated. I made it just after sunset when these tents fell into shadow. The roofs of these tents echo the thrust of the silhouetted mountains in the distance. It was indeed a magical scene, made so by the color and nature of the light itself.

I LOVE this time of day when light is...breathtaking.
I call this time of day "L'Heure où la lumière est sublime et magique"
and you captured it right there...
It could be very early in the morning, it could be at the end of a day.
It looks like a picture taken on another planet...by a "voyageur"...
J'aime vraiment beaucoup cette photo pour tout ce qu'elle renferme.
Hug to you...

Thanks, Iris -- this was one of my favorite images from this trip. I saw the repeating rhythms of the tents and the mountains immediately, and waited a few moments for the color in the sky to intensify yet still be able to hold detail on the campsite. After the sun goes down, things happen very fast with light and color, and I did not have to wait long to get this shot.

The rhythm of shapes enhanced by the warm glow of sunset.......beautiful.

Thanks, Tim. This is one of my favorite images from this entire 18 day trip. The juxtaposition of the pointed tents and pointed mountains provided wonderful subject matter, but it was the colors painted by nature upon this scene at this moment that made the image work so well as expression. Because of our ship's cruise scheduling, there were very few opportunities for me to make pictures at sunset, and this was one of them. I am not sure what this kind of cloud is called -- perhaps it is cirrus. I hope that Rose will eventually come to this image and let us know.

This is beautiful - You've already commented about many of the things I would say, but in addition I would add that the bumpy clouds (I'm sure there is a name for them and that sunlightpix would know what it is) seem to echo to tent peaks.
