Fabulous image...the lighting and composition is superb!

I forget the name of that famous photographer who has the gallery in Bishop: Howell? Anyway, this reminds me of a shot of his, although his was from a much broader perspective. Sure it was a nice shot, but it was too wide an angle, nothing really stood out, just another one of those beautiful shots of the pinnacles, peaks, and needles of the Whitney skyline, illuminated by early morning sunlight. As with your 1st shot of Whitney, this incoporates the grandiosity of the Sierra, but still draws you in to the the immediacy of the area (not sure how really to say it any better/different). Hopefully I'm not too far off the mark, but I believe this shot was taken at about 4,200' or so, making Whitney roughly 10,000' above the foreground subjects. This picture kicks butt over any other shot I've seen similar in presentation.
