Panama hats, Cuenca, Ecuador, 2011

Cuenca is well known for its hat factories. These tightly woven straw fedoras are not just for tourists – they are a staple of Andean fashion. I photographed them en masse here, sitting on their crowns, and converted the image to black and white to emphasize their severe traditional design.

Thanks, Marie -- your own hat shot is just as beautiful.

I am delighted that you find this abstracted image so fascinating, Jude. You are right -- a hat is usually photographed as a single entity, right side up, and set upon the top of a human head. In this case, I've utterly changed the context by grouping five hats together, all of them upside down, with nary a head in sight. This black and white rendering is all about texture, shape, and rhythmic repetition.

What a fantastic abstraction! You have photographed these in such a way that they are completely taken out of context.
This is sooo gorgeous!
