Monarch caterpillar (Danaus plexippus)

This was one of 13 monarch butterfly caterpillars found in Larose Forest today. This one is in the J-position, indicating that it is soon to form a chrysalis. It was very exciting to find so many caterpillars in a relatively small section of the forest area. Monarchs have been so scarce this year, all over, that 13 constitutes an abundance! All summer I have been looking for monarchs and monarch caterpillars and have found only 6 caterpillars to date, until today!

Wonderful to find it in this position. The stages are miraculous to watch, and when that freshly minted beauty emerges from its chrysalis, the world looks to be a better place all around...if even for an instant!
