There has been an ongoing discussion in a butterfly group that I belong to over what makes a Banded Hairstreak and what makes a Hickory Hairstreak. Both species are very similar in appearance and vary enough in appearance that some individuals of one species may show one or more characteristics of the other species. I call it hickory trickery and I was fooled with the individual shown in the previous photo, which I first identified as Hickory but later was told it was in fact a Banded (thanks Ross Layberry). I was a victim of hickory trickery!
There were Hickory Hairstreaks in the area, which is a rare species that I had not seen before (Banded Hairstreaks are widespread and the mostly commonly encountered hairstreak species in my local area), and on this day I returned to try my luck again and was successful in locating and photographing a Hickory Hairstreak. I was lucky that this particular Hickory Hairstreak was content to sit still for a long period of time because it was in terrible, harsh lighting, and I had to pull out my macro lens and ring flash combo to cancel out the harsh natural lighting.
