The Volto Santo is a large wooden crucifix reputed to have been carved by Nicodemus,
who helped Joseph of Arimathea remove Christ's body from the cross.
A legend attached to the crucifix is fanciful, but the reality is that it is probably a 13th c. copy
of an 11th c. original, the latter based on a work of the 8th c.
The Volto Santo of Lucca was highly revered in the late Middle Ages and became an attraction for pilgrims.
Coins were even struck with the image of the Volto Santo which is now housed in a Renaissnance tabernacle
dating from the 15th c.
