Lucca Cathedral of San Martino dates from 1070 when the present structure replaced an older church of San Martino
in order to provide a grand cathedral to house the "miraculous Volto Santo" (Holy Face of Lucca),
alledgedly made by Nicodemus, the man who helped Joseph of Aramathea remove Christ's body from the cross.
The exterior of San Martino is Romanesque, but the interior is Late Gothic, embellished and rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries.
