Congrande della Scala was the scion of the della Scala family , rulers of Verona from 1277 until 1387.
He was sole ruler of Verona from 1311 till his death in 1329, and the chief patron of the poet Dante Alighieri,
who took refuge in Verona between 1312 and 1318.
Congrande was a great warrior, and eventually controlled several neighboring cities, including Vicenza, Padua and Treviso,
