Only the outer wall and gate remain. The tour book says it was founded in 1453 by Jews from Kastoria, Macedonia, at that time already in the Ottoman Empire. Refurbished in the 1800s (perhaps indicated by the "5653" on the gate which I think is 1893 in the Gregorian calendar), it fell into disrepair after the congregation moved to other, better, neighborhoods. A state trust ended up with it and rented to a businessman who demolished it and turned it into a parking lot. The tour book says the parking lot's nickname is "the drive-in synagogue." Cities sure don't stand still.
