Mosaics are small glass tiles placed onto wet plaster. They will appear different depending on the light. As in most museums, flash photography is prohibited in the Chora Church Museum, so the reflections you see are from the ambient interior lighting.

Our guide book said that mosaics were made by small groups that worked together, a "master" who did the more detailed work and less-experienced workers that did the more general work.
