This gape-mouthed face surmounted by goat's horns is set above the door into the folly known as the 'Temple of Piety'.
According to classical theology, Pan was the goat of pastoral land such as fields, woods and orchards and was associated with
the season of Spring and with 'rustic' pastimes, merriment and music-making.
His appearance above the entrance to the folly clearly marks the building as one intended for enjoyment and merry-making despite its apparently sombre name.
