We immediately get introduced to Vietnam traffic. The primary means of
transportation is the motor bike and there are motor bikes, bicycles, cars,
and pedestrians everywhere. There are also few traffic impediments such
as traffic lights or signs and a sense of controlled chaos exists but,
amazingly, it works.
To walk across the street, you hold you breath and step out into traffic
and the traffic swerves about you. You continue to walk to the far lane and
that traffic swerves about you. You reach the opposite side of the street
and wonder what you worried about. The one rule, though, is: never stop
walking - the traffic anticipates your movement and may hit you if you stop.
The rule of the road is the larger vehicle has the right of way so to turn
left, our bus beeps its horn and slowly turns left into oncoming traffic.
Oncoming traffic swerves around us without complaint and everyone is happy.
Wearing a helmet is mandatory and many wear a mask to protect their face
while riding these windshield-less motor bikes. Families of 4 (and even 5)
will ride one motor bike and somehow everyone stays on without falling
or other mishap.
