Each year in late September - early October, four Buddha images from the Phaung-daw-oo Pagoda tour to 14 villages around the lake carried on a replica of the royal barge, which is towed by long boats of leg-rowers. On the final day of the festival, a festive procession of decorated boats leads the barge and its revered contents back to the pagoda with hundreds of small boats following and lining the shore. Later in the day some of the boats, with up to 100 leg-rowers in each, participate in traditional races.
